Dear Antonios,
Thank you for your email regarding the proposal of a national anti-poverty plan. I certainly support a measure that improve conditions for the many Australians living in poverty. I expressed support for such an initiative by voting for the motion in the Senate on October 12 that called for the establishment of an anti-poverty plan including improved job opportunities for poor people and better government research into national poverty, as well as increasing the current payment level of Newstart and Austudy allowances to the level of age pensions-just above the half median income poverty line. Unfortunately, this motion was not supported by the Government, the Labor Party or Family First. The Democratas believe that such a plan is critically important , particularly now when the proposed welfare to work and industrial relations legislation threatens to further disadvantage many Australians. Pushing people from disability and parenting pensions on to Newstart Allowance and failing to provide adequate support particularly to those with disabilities, while simultaneously undermining workers' conditions and wages, will only result in more poverty and suffering in the community. With the Coalition controlled Senate, protecting people from the Government's harsh polices has become much more difficult. However I have worked hard in the Senate for years to prevent harsh and unjust measures being inflicted on those who are least well off and will continue to do so.
Yours Sincerely
Natasha Stott Despoja Senator for South Australia 26 October 2005 |
