Dear Antonios, In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the importance of cities in the American economic and cultural fabric has never been more obvious. Influential columnists such as Thomas Friedman are also making the critical link between a clean energy economy and healthy cities. Recognizing the importance of advancing a clean energy future in rural and urban communities, The Apollo Alliance has been working closely for some time with a number of groups and partners to advance clean energy jobs strategies. Here are three of the most recent developments of note: Apollo Partners with ICLEI's Cities for Change Together with ICLEI's Cities for Change, The Apollo Alliance has just released "High Performance Cities: A Guide to Energy-Saving Policies for Urban Areas." In this document, we bring together a number of different strategies that can be used individually or in concert to reduce energy use and achieve real energy savings - savings that can be reinvested to fund even more significant clean energy programs in the future. The progress of ICLEI's Cities for Change demonstrates that cities will lead the way on tackling the tough issues that our federal government fails to take initiative on. State and local governments can lead the way towards energy independence in America by employing strategies ranging from using biofuels in fleet vehicles to retrofitting public buildings to meet minimum energy efficiency standards. In doing so, state and local governments not only help the environment, they also help themselves by cutting energy costs, relieving pressure on tight budgets, and demonstrating the essential value of public investment in new energy technologies. Apollo is proud to partner with these innovative mayors. Apollo and Flex Fuel Hybrid Programs Apollo is also partnering with publicly-owned utilities, led by Austin Energy, to promote unique new efforts to develop flexible fuel hybrid programs in model cities. Learn more here. New York City Takes a Step Toward Energy Independence The Apollo Alliance recently assisted in the passage of New York City's Green Building Bill. The bill unanimously passed on Thursday September 15th. The measure will help create a strong economy and a healthy city, by saving the city energy, cleaning up communities, and creating over $12 billion in new construction and good jobs for the city. The overall reduction in energy demand will help reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil and revolutionize the way the city is powered. Healthy and high performance buildings have an amazing potential to create good jobs for workers. In addition to potentially creating thousands of new jobs for the city, no other activity has greater impact on the city's environment and community's health than building construction and use.
Sincerely, |
