Dear Antonios

Thank you for your email expressing your opposition to the Howard Government's extreme changes to welfare for single parents and people with a disability.

After nine long years, the Howard Government has still not come up with a sensible plan to help people move from welfare into work. Their extreme changes will simply cut the incomes of many vulnerable Australians by moving them from one welfare payment to a lower welfare payment.

The government's approach shows how out of touch they are.

At the cold heart of their changes to welfare is a cut to the incomes of many single parents and people with a disability.

They are out of touch with the experiences of Australians who rely on welfare payments to get by.

They are out of touch with Australians with a disability, who often struggle to find an employer who will take them on.

They are out of touch with parents, who struggle to find work within school hours and then struggle to find childcare outside of school hours.

As well as cutting people’s incomes, these changes force many people with a disability and single parents to look for work. But the Howard Government leaves them unprepared by not offering enough opportunities for training and skill development that would help many people get work.

The 600 000 people currently on the parenting payment have only been allocated 12,300 vocational training places – and these have to be shared with 60,000 mature age unemployed. And the support offered to people with a disability is equally inadequate.

Labor believes that people with a disability and single parents need practical help, not a cut in income. We support real welfare reform that develops real opportunities for people to become job-ready and gain work.

But the Howard Government is too out of touch to understand that cutting the incomes of these Australians will not help them build a secure future.

Labor congratulates ACOSS on its campaign to highlight the unfairness of the government's approach. We will continue to take up the fight for the hundreds of thousands of Australians who will lose under the Howard Government's extreme changes to welfare.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding this important matter.

Yours sincerely
