Dear Mr Symeonakis Thank you for your email expressing concerns about the growing number of Australians who are living in poverty. I share your concerns that it is not acceptable that in a rich country like Australia, so many people should be living in poverty. After nine long years of the Howard Government, the gap between the rich and poor has continue to grow. And the problem will only get worse when the Government's extreme industrial relations proposals and unfair changes to social security payments are fully implemented. Sadly, John Howard is so out of touch with the reality faced by Australians in poverty that he thinks his plans to cut social security payments, drive down the minimum wage and slash working conditions will help people. Labor continues to work hard on policies to address poverty. You may aware that last year Labor initiated a major Senate Inquiry into poverty, which recommended a large range of actions to fight poverty, including the development and implementation of a National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Labor is strongly committed to coordinated action between governments and the community to try and make a real difference to Australians who are struggling . Labor in Government will consider all avenues to confront the scourge of poverty, including a National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Thang you for bringing your concerns to my attention. Yours sincerely Linda Kirk Labor Senator for South Australia 8 November 2005 |
