Dear Antonios,
You already know the truth: We are all connected to acts of torture.
Unfortunately, many people in this country don't know the truth about torture.
You - your action, your good word - are powerful tools to stop the torture being
committed in our names by our government.
Today, I'd like you to do two things in our campaign. Take a look at the video
we've created that illustrates how we are all connected to acts of torture.
Then:
Take the next step by pressuring Congress to outlaw the outsourcing of torture.
Use this video with friends, family and colleagues. Send it to people who you
think will be as troubled as you are by our country's practice of sending people
to Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco where they are tortured.
As you know, our campaign against torture has gained momentum. In December, the
anti-torture bill passed through Congress, reaffirming the prohibition on the
use of torture and inhumane treatment of detainees in U.S. custody. However,
this victory did not come without new challenges. In signing the bill, President
Bush issued a "signing statement" in which he asserted that he could waive the
ban on torture and inhumane treatment when he deemed it necessary. The President
has also signed legislation that, for the first time in U.S. history, allows
evidence extracted through torture to be used in military proceedings. This is
unacceptable.
With your help and the help of 35,000 others, we have already called on
President Bush to:
tell the truth about U.S. acts of torture reported since he declared the "war on
terror" in 2001.
demand accountability for these crimes.
ensure that torture in our names never happens again.
Our government calls this practice of torture extraordinary renditions. We call
it outsourcing torture. Take the next step. Click here and demand that Congress
outlaw the outsourcing of torture.
Sincerely,
Bill Schulz
Executive Director
